Meet Designer Mimi Plange
Mimi Plange was born in Accra, Ghana, and grew up in Southern California. She’s been attracted to art at a very young age, it’s creation, its many faces and meanings. The art led her to a passion for clothes. She was hooked on the incredible fantasy that one could actually design beautiful clothing for a living-and that was exactly what she wanted to do. Plange stayed focused on that idea, and as a child, she knew that it was what she was going to do, “I just had to find my own path and believe.” Starting with Architecture at UC Berkeley, she then attended San Francisco’s Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising. A month after graduating from FIDM, she moved to New York to pursue her career in fashion.
After 11 years of working in the fashion industry, Plange decided to branch out along with her husband and launch her own brad, Boudoir D’Huitres, which she later changed to Mimi Plange. A womenswear line inspired by her culture and different cultures throughout history. Her main point of focus is the Victorian age and Pre colonial dress in various parts of Africa.
Michelle Obama wore one of Mimi Plange’s skirt’s when she paid a visit to the daytime talk show The View, which helped bring attention to the designer.
Plange has also had the opportunity of dressing celebrities such as Rihanna, Vanessa Hudgens, Alicia Keys, Estelle, Janelle Monae and many others.
With her love of the Victorian period and African culture, she is able to implement a modern twist from past eras into her pieces, creating a signature look within her collection.
